Our Core Distinctives
We Are a Coalition of Silicon Valley Churches
Standing on the Truth of God's Word*
God's Word is our ultimate authority. The Bible unequivocally affirms that all human beings are created in God's image (Gen. 1:27), possessing infinite value and worth. We maintain the humanity and personhood of pre-born children (Ps. 51:5, 139:13-16; Lk. 1:44). Because of God's justice and love for mankind, God hates the shedding of innocent blood (Prov. 6:16-19; cf. also Ex. 23:7, Dt. 27:25). We recognize abortion to be the sinful act of murdering a pre-born child. In a time when the world calls "evil good and good evil" (Isa. 5:20), we are resolved to speak the truth of God's Word in love (2 Peter 3:8-16).
Ministering the Gospel of Grace
Abortion is a sin (Ex. 20:13), which means our approach must be centered on salvation from sin through the gospel (Jn. 3:16-17). Every sinner is guilty before God (Rom. 1:18-20, Jam. 2:10) and spiritually dead (Col. 2:13, Rom. 5:12), standing in need of God's forgiveness and new life. Through the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, God offers forgiveness and life to all who repent and believe in him (Acts 2:38, 16:31). Jesus "is the propitiation for our sins" (1 John 2:2), and God "made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Cor. 5:21). By virtue of our union with Christ, God puts to death our sinful nature through Jesus' death, so that "just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life" through his resurrection (Rom. 6:4). The gospel is the only remedy for the personal and societal sin of abortion, because "there is salvation in no one else" but Jesus (Acts 4:12). We are committed to meeting the practical needs of families considering abortion, but we recognize their greatest need is for salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Prioritizing the Role of Local Churches
God has entrusted his church with the gospel of grace, "the message of reconciliation," and He has made believers "ambassadors for Christ" (2 Cor. 5:19-20). The world will not bring the gospel to bear on the sin of abortion. Local churches must go. The church is "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" (Matt. 5:13-16). Local churches are God's appointed means of proclaiming Jesus, in word and deed, "to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Helping the helpless, defending the defenseless, and obeying the call to "rescue those who are being taken away to death" are responsibilities of the body of Christ (Prov. 24:11; Isa 1:17; Jam. 1:27). Local churches are bearers of the good news and manifestations of Christ's sacrificial love in the world. As "fellow workers for the truth" in Silicon Valley (3 Jn. 1:8), who collectively recognize the importance of "sound doctrine" to the health and effectiveness of local churches (Tit. 2:1; 2 Tim. 4:2-4), we value unity in our common affirmation of the Confessional Statement of The Gospel Coalition.
Seeking the Abolition of Abortion
We are committed to the abolition of abortion. The murder of pre-born children must be abolished, not regulated. God says, "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image" (Gen. 9:6; cf. also Lev. 24:17, Deut. 27:24). The laws of this nation, which permit the murder of pre-born children, stand in direct contradiction with the law of God: "You shall not murder" (Ex. 20:13). The laws of our land must change to protect divine image bearers of all ages. We are grateful for lives saved by incremental measures and will fight for legislation that protects innocent human life. At the same time, we call for an immediate end to legal abortion. It is not our desire to see the murder of pre-born children gradually outlawed. Civil magistrates must use their God-given authority to establish justice for all (Rom. 13:1-4). We will not rest until that happens.
